Imaging and Defining Emergent Behaviors of the Immune Response

The immune system functions dynamically and assembles synaptic circuits on-demand. Our lab uses real-time microscopy to study motility and signaling processes as immune cells survey their environment and communicate with one another. We also study the dynamics of communication to identify patterns of interactions that make the immune system a ‘system’. We are then seeking to perturb those patterns/circuits to determine how they work and for therapeutic benefit. Over the years our studies have generated real-time ‘movie’ datasets; these were often the first demonstration of key concepts in immunology and cell biology.
